In constant demand as a performer, teacher and musical artist, tenor John Concepcion maintains a busy performance schedule on both the concert and operatic stages. He has performed operatic roles with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Santa Fe Opera, Tulsa Opera, Cleveland Opera, Hawaii Opera Theatre, Portland Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Pine Mountain Music Festival, and most recently with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs (Rossini’s Il Signor Bruschino). On the concert stage, he has sung with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Grant Park Festival, Minnesota Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Hawaii Symphony, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Kalamazoo Symphony, Elgin Choral Union, Oak Park/River Forest Symphony, Chicago Chorale, Hinsdale Chamber Orchestra, Southwest Symphony, the Woodstock Mozart Festival, Downers Grove Choral Society, and Chorus Angelorum (Whiting, IN).
Notable recent appearances include Bach’s Mass in B-minor, Handel’s Messiah, DuBois’ Seven Last Words of Christ, Rinuccio in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Mozart’s Requiem, John Blow’s Venus & Adonis and Rameau’s Les Indes Galantes (both with Ars Musica of Chicago), and Ned Rorem’s Homer (a collaboration with the William Ferris Chorale and CUBE), in celebration of the composer’s eightieth birthday.
John attended the Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies in Aldeburgh, England to study the German Oratorio repertoire under Bach specialist, tenor Kurt Equiluz, toured the Hawaiian Islands with the Hawaii Symphony in a program of arias and songs, and was a member of the Steans Institute for Young Singers at the Ravinia Festival. Currently a full-time chorus member at Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Grant Park Festival Chorus, John completed his graduate studies (with distinction) in voice performance at North Park University in Chicago, and is currently an adjunct voice teacher at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts.
